Ribbon:    Horizontal green and light blue stripes.
Made of:    Silver medal, hallmarked by the Paris mint and marked "Argent" (silver) on the rim, signed "O. Roty".
Creation:   

Instituted: 15 January 1896, to participants in the Second Madagascar expedition in 1894-95.

Description:    Circular silver medal with laterally-pierced cylinder suspension; the face with a female head facing left, wearing a visored, winged helmet and representing the French Republic, inscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’, signed ‘O. Roty’; the reverse a military trophy of arms with a standard inscribed ‘HONNEUR ET PATRIE’ on oak and laurel leaves and inscribed ‘MADAGASCAR 1895’; deeply age-toned; on probably original shortened ribbon with the distinctive silver campaign bar with oak and laurel leaves, dated ‘1895’. The medal was created on 15 January 1896 and awarded to the soldiers and sailors of the second expeditionary corps who served on Madagascar during the period 8 December 1894 to 31 October 1896. The corps was of divisional strength (15,000 men) under General Duchene and, although only 57 men died in combat, more than a third of the force was lost to typhoid and tropical disease before General Gallieni eventually succeeded in pacifying the island.

Condition:  

Very Good condition the condecoration, minor marks according with it age. On the back of the decoration you can see a small piece of paper stuck on the ribbon that has written the type of decoration it is. The ribbon is in very good condition.
