History:

In 1803, Empress Maria Fëdorovna founded an educational institution in Gatchina, transforming a former barn of Prince Grigorij Grigor'evič Orlov into an imposing three-story building. This institute, initially called the Rural Educational House, aimed to accommodate orphans of both sexes, providing them with basic education and vocational training. Children with academic potential were sent to study at the medical-surgical academy, while those less inclined learned practical trades. In 1837, the facility became the Gatchina Orphan Institute, exclusively for orphans from noble families, providing an education aimed at training domestic teachers and officials. From 1855, in memory of its founder, it took the name of Gatchina Orphan Institute of Emperor Nicholas I. Among the notable figures who taught there was Konstantin Dmitrievič Ušinskij, known for his contribution to pedagogy.

Until 1903, there was no generally accepted form of graduation badge. On May 12, Nicholas II approved a chest badge in commemoration of the institute's centennial anniversary, the right to wear which was granted to the institute's teachers and permanent members of the Trusteeship Society for former students of the GSI and their families. The badge has a screw fastening and was worn on the chest.
